Fourayes MD, Phil joined the Rural Policy Panel for the December Red Talk on the subject ‘Is food in the UK expensive?’
The panel covered the race-to-the-bottom pricing that we have experienced in food retail. It is not sustainable for farmers and food producers, and international trade deals opening up the UK to cheap imports could compound the issue.
The panel discussed how business can thrive in a challenging climate, the importance of fair margins and how we educate people to value food.
The round table group included Yvonne Fovargue, MP & Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Consumer Protection, Luke Pollard, Shadow Environment Minister, Vicki Hird, Head of Sustainable Farming and food & farming policy lead at Sustain, Rosemary Shrager, chef, author & food campaigner and Sarah Dodds, Agriculture Lead for MHA MacIntyre Hudson. Chaired by Sarah Calcutt, a 6th generation farmer who has held most jobs in the food sector and is now actively involved in the National Fruit Show, British Apples & Pears and New Covent Garden Market Authority.
